Early Mornings in Lompoc

October 25, 2013  •  Leave a Comment

Lompoc is a special place for me. I found a best friend in Lompoc, I fell in love in Lompoc, and I first learned what "dirty-dancing" was in Lompoc (said first love went to public school where they were actually allowed to dance).

Now, you have probably never even heard of the place (and I'm positive some people in Lompoc would like to keep it that way) but it's a gorgeous hilly small-town nestled just above Santa Barbara, California.  In the spring its rolling green hills give you the illusion of Napa Valley and in the Summer it feels like a midwest ranch town. There are cows, and wine, and the Firestone Brewery...and all arranged within 15 minutes of one another. There's even a lavender farm (shh, that's a town secret). Oh, and it's about 20 minutes from the Hitching Post where they filmed the movie Sideways and where I was introduced to the grilled Artichoke (phenomenal, btw).

My Aunt and Uncle work at Vandenberg AFB in Lompoc, and they are probably the only reason I even know where Lompoc is! My cousin is this amazingly charming, sweet, europhile who would be well suited for a life in Downton Abbey. Doctor Who made it into her vows and I love her for it. The tea shop she took us to (pictured below) is Penelope's, it's this darling English Tea house that serves homegrown teas and things like Pasties (they don't go on your boobs, I asked). The woman there is so incredibly sweet and really knows her teas. I had one called Paris that was so deeply flavored I thought I was drinking a new tea every time I picked up my cup. Plus it's so stinking cute!

While I was there I decided to document the town how I know it. A place to get good food, hang out with family, and fall in love.

The old theater in Lompoc. Note the title on the marquee.

Surf beach is home to the Amtrak Surfliner, this is the park just outside of the train station. This is just under the bridge on your way to the beach. I honestly was afraid someone was hiding in here and ready to jump out at me but it made for a great photo. Check out those textures! Mmm love it.

You gotta have a token rusty strut right? I mean, am I right? And of course there's some bird photos. I know you don't know this but at my shoots a bird ALWAYS makes an appearance. It's always run-and-gun where I shootshootshoot and then one comes out but without fail I will have a bird. Haven't you heard? Put a bird on it! (any Portlandia fans out there?)

I hope you enjoyed your jaunt into the heart of California as much as I did. If you get a chance to drive through I recommend the Jalama Burger at Jalama Burger. :) See you next week! This weekend I get to shoot some Preggo bellies! SO Excited!

Love and Beautiful Photography,
